Position Description: 

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures throughout the organization’s accounting cycle while also ensuring excellence in the Company’s day-to-day financial accounting and reporting functions by assisting in developing, implementing, and maintaining departmental policies and procedures. This includes analyzing financial information, preparing accurate and timely financial reports and statements, and ensuring appropriate accounting control procedures. The Accounting Manager is also required to supervise while leveraging and developing the strengths of the accounting team. This position needs to understand the Company’s business transactions and their related impact on the general ledger and financial statements of the company in order to provide insightful analysis to the management team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Controls & Compliance Management

  • Supervise the input and handling of financial data and reports for the company’s automated financial systems.
  • “Own” the general ledger – ensure understanding of all GL accounts and ensure all accounts are reconciled and corrected in a timely manner by the accounting team.
  • Review monthly financial statements including conducting trend and variance analyses to ensure accuracy of reporting.
  • Assist in the management of the external audit process.
  • Provide information to external and internal auditors in a timely manner
  • Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures.
  • Prepare financial reports and statements, including profit and loss statements, monthly closings, annual reports, and cost accounting reports.
  • Monitor and review accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities.
  • Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year end close.
  • Assist to drive the month-end accounting closing process including reconciliation of all general ledger accounts on the agreed timetable
  • Establish, maintain, and coordinate the implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures.
  • Develop and maintain financial databases, computer software systems and manual filing systems.
  • Analyze and advise on business operations including revenue and expenditure trends, financial commitments and future revenues.
  • Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Analyze financial information to provide recommendations about efficient use of resources and procedures and to solve business and financial problems.
  • Oversee and maintain reconciliation of general ledger accounts.
  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to accounts.
  • Facilitate timely and accurate ad hoc reporting requirements including governmental census requirements, miscellaneous information requests from senior management and other functional departments/distribution centers.
  • Assist in the development and continued performance of a proper internal control environment around the general ledger function.
  • Ensure accurate and appropriate recording and analysis of revenues and expenses.
  • Prepare for and coordinate supporting documentation for financial audits.
  • Interact with internal and external auditors in completing audits.
  • Partner with selected corporate departments to help them understand their department’s monthly financial results and assist them in developing their future forecasts and plans.

Process Improvement Management

  • Support the development of process improvements to ensure accurate and appropriate information, tools, and process frameworks are in place.
  • Proactively work with the functional users to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Suggest and drive process improvement via technology based solutions

Team Management

  • Complete operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees and following up on their work results.
  • Maintain financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (or Finance/Business Administration, or related discipline)
  • Certifications: Successful completion of certification exams (e.g., CPA, CGA, CA, etc.)
  • Experience: 4 to 8 years of accounting experience
  • Experience: 2 years supervisory experience
  • Strong Excel skills and experience accounting and reporting and analysis of data in large ERP systems (i.e. Oracle, SAP, etc.)

  • Professional Accounting Standards, Requirements, and Procedures Understanding and Compliance
    • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of professional accounting standards, requirements, and procedures related to the business (e.g. IFRS).
    • Ensure the accuracy of financial transactions and reports.
    • Oversee that the department conforms to accounting standards, requirements, and procedures, and remediates issues in a timely manner.
    • Keep up to date with most current professional accounting standards, requirements, and procedures.
  • Organizational Finance Policies Compliance and Maintenance
    • Evaluate and update the organization's policies.
    • Serve as a subject-matter expert in the organization's policies.
    • Anticipate potential risks or issues related to the organization's policies and develop a risk mitigation plan to accompany these issues. 
    • Enforce compliance with organizational regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Conduct medium-term (6-12 months) internal scans to identify barriers and opportunities related to the organization's current internal compliance policies and procedures.
  • Financial Accounting
    • Ensure proper disclosure of the organization's financial statements and serve as a subject-matter expert in the reporting obligations of the organization.
    • Analyze organizational financial statements to assess the impact of different processes that support general accounting and identify trends and areas of improvement.
    • Integrate or improve the organization's month-end closing activities.
    • Support the design of the organization's chart of accounts, according to industry best practices and business fit.
    • Oversee and approve reconciliation and adjustment to the operational processes underlying financial transactions.
    • Manage and ensure conformity, accuracy, and completeness of the organization's processes that support general accounting.
  • Management Accounting
    • Evaluate the cost/volume/profit of the organization's products or services, as well as the impact of changes to the organization's supply chain and the impact that leveraging different pricing and cost strategies will have on the organization's profitability.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of management accounting systems.
    • Perform analyses on internal key performance indicators (KPIs), as well as KPIs for the organization's target customers.
    • Deliver high-quality, accurate, and complete management reporting information.
    • Participate in analyzing competitors' financial information, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, in comparison to the organization's.
  • Internal Control
    • Conduct medium-term (6-12 month) internal scans to identify barriers and opportunities related to the organization's internal control systems.
    • Assist in the development, maintenance, and updating of fraud or error detection protocol. 
    • Monitor employees who work with financial information or financial assets to ensure compliance with internal regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Systematically assemble pertinent organizational information for internal and external auditing processes.
    • Assist in developing internal auditing procedures or programs and address complex problems related to the audit plan.     
    • Develop auditing communications regarding results and next steps for use internally and externally.         
    • Communicate with external auditors regarding any basic auditing queries.
  • Finance
    • Execute advanced activities with working capital management, including receivables and payables.
    • Analyze and identify opportunities for cash investments.
    • Make advanced treasury management decisions.
    • Identify areas of opportunity or barriers for the organization's financing initiatives and foreign exchange management by conducting a short-term (1-6 months) environmental scan.
