Position Description: 

The Server Engineer is responsible for the administration and support of all Linux and Windows systems. This role is responsible to provide direct technical support for requirements gathering, design, planning, coordination, and implementation of releases, upgrades, or changes to the ATD computing environment. The Server Engineer is also responsible for troubleshooting problems, and the rapid restoration of production service incidents. The candidate will be responsible for creating status reports regarding work performed, system availability, performance and capacity utilization as required. The Server Engineer is expected to build partnerships with project teams and works closely with internal and external customers and vendors to develop proposals and supporting analysis for operational improvement.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Day to day support of computing environments (e.g. Linux, Windows), typically teamed with data center operations, production support and escalation teams
  • Provide 24-hour on-call support for problem analysis and resolution to system problems on a rotational basis
  • Train others in proper procedures for handling issues
  • Review incident trends and proactively register problems and implement changes to reduce outages
  • Develop a baseline understanding of each system’s performance and resource utilization trends and utilize information to project growth requirements and plan for future capacity requirements
  • Establish normal operating parameters around which alerts or exception reporting is triggered.
  • Review new system initiatives, beginning at the business requirements stage, to ensure that operational impact is identified and incorporated into the system development and implementation plan
  • Act as facilitator and subject matter expert among various departmental, administrative, and affiliated user groups
  • Work with service providers to maintain current implementations of hardware and software to ensure the maximum performance and availability
  • Develop and maintain effective working relations with users, vendors, and other department personnel
  • Evaluate, select, integrate, and implement new system architectures, tools and techniques
  • Review and analyze vendor-supplied utilities, software packages and engineering releases for the environment
  • Attend vendor conferences and presentations to observe demonstration of system software
  • Maintain and update relevant components of the disaster recovery plan, and performs recovery testing as part of an overall disaster recovery planning process
  • Understand and promote standards, guidelines, policies and procedures for the use and integration of technology
  • Implement and review availability strategy to ensure business and service uptime requirements are met or exceeded

Qualifications



Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in the areas of Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5-7 years progressive IT experience to include 3 or more years of experience as a System Administrator
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in Linux and Windows hardware specification and configuration, performance tuning techniques, TCP/IP network configuration, enterprise backup administration, scripting and automation utilities, capacity planning, workload management & distribution, implementation testing, and event management
  • Expert knowledge of AirWatch configuration and operation
  • Experience with VMware administration
  • Advanced experience with Active Directory, LDAP, DNS, DHCP
  • Experience with backup and recovery processes and procedures
  • Certification in Microsoft, RedHat, VMware or equivalent experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to implement change
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructure servicing
  • Extensive knowledge on appropriate hardware, operating systems, and network connectivity issues
  • Expert knowledge of server, user, application, and desktop data virtualization
  • Proven expertise with scripting languages
  • Integration expertise with a Microsoft Windows computing infrastructure including directory services, file sharing, networking, client configuration, and multi-platform tiered application deployment
  • Experience with large, enterprise computing environments, and collaboration with multiple functional teams and customers to ensure high service levels and effective solutions
  • Demonstrated experience in successful development and implementation of new technologies and work process
  • Competency in project management, effectively arranging resources, and managing multiple projects in a cross-functional environment
