Position Description: 

ATD is the largest independent replacement tire distributor in North America. With sales of nearly $5B in 2020, we continue to focus on accelerating our business in the context of changing market, customer and consumer trends. The Strategy Realization Office plays a critical role in driving ATD’s growth and strategic transformation by managing the enterprise portfolio planning, alignment, delivery and measurement efforts to ensure the execution and overall value realization of ATD’s corporate strategy. The SRO is principally tasked with providing and continuously improving strategy execution as a core competency for ATD. The Director, Enterprise Project Portfolio Management (EPPM) will work cross functionally across the entirety of ATD’s lines of business, engaging with functional partners in Finance, Marketing, Merchandising, Sales, Supply Chain, Revenue Management, HR, Digital, IT, and field personnel.

As the Director, EPPM, you will be at the forefront of ATD’s transformation and expected to play a leadership role in its on-going success. This role requires a strategic problem solver who is an effective influencer with a high degree of business acumen. You will effectively manage a team of Project and Strategic Initiatives Managers to bridge strategy to realization through portfolio management, initiative, program and project management and delivery, capacity and resource planning and measurement to produce sustainable results that meet customer needs and achieve strategic objectives. The ideal person has demonstrated excellence in growth, people leadership, strategy activation, finance, go-to-market, operations, and technology.

Primary Responsibilities

Manage Strategic Growth Portfolio

  • Translate the enterprise strategy into actionable execution plans by partnering with the Corporate Strategy team to guide executive leaders and cross-functional teams through the annual strategic planning process, ultimately resulting in a portfolio of programs, projects and investments to deliver on key objectives
  • Facilitate the quarterly portfolio planning cycle to continuously evolve and manage the portfolio in line with corporate objectives
  • Facilitate streamlined portfolio governance and decision making to ensure initiatives, programs and projects are continuously aligned with strategic priorities
  • Partner with business leaders and key stakeholders to manage the sequencing and resourcing of strategic initiatives and portfolio projects, ensuring efforts are positioned for success throughout their lifecycles
  • Drive organizational visibility and buy-in to the strategic portfolio roadmap to ensure organizational alignment to high-priority efforts across the business
  • Provide transparency to portfolio performance with dashboard metrics and KPIs
  • Serve as a thought-leader in business planning and actionable strategy development across the business

Reduce Execution Risk of the Corporate Strategy

  • Lead a team of high-performing Project Managers and Strategic Initiative Managers to effectively activate and deliver strategic projects, programs and initiatives
  • Oversee all efforts to plan, manage and initiate activities in alignment with and contributing to strategic projects and initiatives, proactively managing alignment across functions multiple Lines of Business.
  • Ensure coordination of releases across products and projects for seamless portfolio-level execution, partnering closely with Change Management and other key stakeholders for execution
  • Serve as a champion for the customer by challenging project, product and leadership teams to achieve customer success and value realization beyond project delivery
  • Partner with strategic sourcing/Business/IT teams to participate in RFx events and assist with vendor contract/SOW execution activities
  • Manage portfolio level issues/risks and develop relevant risk mitigation plans

Enable Realization of Value from Strategic Initiatives

  • Facilitate the ongoing evaluation of strategy realization by identifying and reporting on key indicators of success and developing measurement plans at the overall strategic portfolio level
  • Facilitate the ongoing evaluation of strategic initiatives by developing initiative-level measurement plans and KPIs and assisting project leads and project managers with the effective measurement of progress against goals.
  • Leverage data to guide and inform iterative efforts and investments in key initiatives
  • Regularly report on portfolio-level value realization and investment efficiency

Build Strategy Execution as an organizational competency for ATD

  • Contribute to the development of strategy execution as a core competency by leading the design and implementation of a standard project management methodology, best practices, and tools to drive and facilitate the successful delivery of projects.
  • Drive relentless improvement in ATD’s ability to effectively execute on our strategy by bringing the best of multiple methodologies to bear (e.g. agile, lean, etc.) and continuously developing best practices, tools and templates to improve operational excellence
  • Support the organizational transition to agile methods


  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university is required
  • MBA preferred


  • 10+ years of work experience in general management in high growth environments, management consulting, strategic portfolio and program delivery, and/or strategy and strategy realization. Prior experience in a corporate strategy or Strategy or Transformation realization role is highly desirable with a minimum 5 years of post-MBA experience. 
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • SAFe, PMP, PgMP, PfMP, , or other related project management certification is beneficial.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to lead high-performing teams and work collaboratively to build strong cross-functional relationships
  • Validated results in growth strategy implementation, strategic planning and activation, project delivery and initiative measurement.
  • Proven abilities to ask the right questions and to use sound business judgment when collaborating with a wide range of partners.
  • Effective and mature communicator, able to convey complex ideas in a clear, concise manner both verbally and in written form; comfortable in business and technical discussions.
  • Demonstrated experience in building trusting relationships and influencing others
  • Self-starter who leans into and can multitask in fast-paced and often ambiguous environments.
