Position Description: 

The Demand Planning team is responsible for driving Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) at ATD, with the consensus Demand Plan as the backbone. The Demand Planning team was founded less than two years ago as the organization recognized the critical need for a collaborative plan that aligns our sales, finance and supply chain teams. Our team is small, nimble and responsible for forecasting over 2M item-dc combinations across all of ATD’s business units, sales channels and distribution centers.

The Demand Planning Analyst is the highly visible interface to sales, marketing, pricing, procurement, supply chain, category management and finance. This position leads monthly meetings with key counterparts across these departments and provides input to business plans.

The Demand Planning Analyst creates and maintains demand plans by taking statistical forecasts and incorporating business intelligence and forecast information gathered from internal and external sources. The demand plans drive inventory targets, purchasing, and business plans, and are vital to ATD’s success.

Primary Functions:

Basic Functions:

  • Basic and advanced time-series forecast modeling
  • Develop demand plans at multiple levels of item, location and time horizons
  • Collaborate with sales, marketing, pricing, supply chain, category management and finance to:
  • Ensure that current and accurate business assumptions are included
  • Research demand drivers and evaluate the impact on demand plan
  • Research and reconcile significant demand plan variances
  • Refine the demand plan to reflect assumptions from collaborators
  • Provide input to Supply Planning team in developing inventory strategies on existing items, new products introductions, and product phase-outs
  • Use and maintain Demand Planning tool parameters and assumptions

Job Functions:

  • Create, execute and aggregate statistical forecasts at multiple levels
  • Gather, analyze and validate data
  • Review resulting statistical forecast models
  • Identify root causes and drivers to improve forecasts
  • Facilitate collaborative planning process with stakeholders to reach consensus:
  • Prepare relevant material to facilitate research and discussion
  • Lead demand plan review meetings with internal stakeholders as well as vendors
  • Monitor monthly trends in forecast error and identify drivers of variance
  • Identify relevant market-related data and competitive intelligence
  • Prepare and maintain reports to support demand planning process
  • Review demand drivers including sales, financial and marketing plans:
  • Present, solicit, and assess feedback from key stakeholders
  • Review promotional plans with sales
  • Review marketing plans with marketing
  • Review pricing adjustments with pricing
  • Review assortment changes with category management

Key Results:

  • Monthly demand plan which incorporates market trends that allows the company to predict customer demand and provide its supply chain ability to plan to meet that demand
  • Relationships with sales, marketing, pricing, procurement, supply chain, category management and finance to facilitate knowledge sharing
  • Visibility to opportunities and risks regarding customer replenishment approaches and goals
  • Demand plan input to annual and quarterly financial/ business plans
  • Continually improved processes, tools and methods to improve demand plan results

Key Partners (Positions):

  • Stakeholders in the Executive Sales & Operations planning process (SVP or EVP level)
  • Subject matter experts including but not limited to sales, marketing, pricing, procurement, supply chain, category management and finance personnel
  • Cross-functional team members including but not limited to sales, marketing, pricing, procurement, supply chain, category management and finance personnel
  • Strategy, business development and transformation team members
  • Senior Executive team



  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university or equivalent experience
  • Proactive self-starter with the ability to work effectively under tight timelines
  • Ability to lead meetings and problem solve with an unstructured/undefined problem
  • Ability to solve new problems through problem structuring, analytics and approach
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group from subject matter experts to executives
  • Expert level proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access)


  • Prior experience in demand planning is highly desirable with 3-4 years of real-world experience
  • APICS, Forecasting Certification, or Lean/ Six-Sigma certifications preferred (LSS)
  • Expert level of proficiency in Time-Series Forecasting
  • Demand Planning software (e.g. ToolsGroup, Kinaxis, Logility, Manugstics) experience preferred
  • Understanding of financial and operational impacts of forecasts and uncertainty
  • Knowledge of SQL, Access, Tableau, Alteryx or other data mining/ analytical software is preferred
  • Team and people management including ability to lead and work in teams
  • MBA or other advanced degree preferred

Work Environment/Travel Requirements:

  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Travel Required: Less than 5%
