Position Description: 

American Tire Distributors (ATD) is seeking a strategic, experienced, energetic Communications Manager located in Huntersville, North Carolina.

The ideal candidate is a creative and strategic thinker with strong experience developing and managing high-profile communications programs across the enterprise. As a Communications Manager, you will be responsible for corporate communications planning, content development and execution to build the strategy for promoting trust and transparency while building a positive brand image by owning the dissemination of information.

This role requires excellent communication skills, successful at collaborating in a matrix environment and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced culture. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to work cross-functionally and leading proactive and reactive communications programs with tangible results. A motivated self-starter who is able to proactively offer ideas and strategies with the ability to operate on a tactical, persistent, sustainable level. This role will need to have a high bar for writing, grammar, and high attention to detail to deliver high-quality content for all stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, edit and write content for a variety of internal communications mediums, such as a staff intranet, quarterly magazine, regular email bulletin and other ATD owned channels. You may also be required to work on the layout and design of content. 
  • Ensure organizational initiatives and projects are successfully communicated to associates and stakeholders. 
  • Identify and implement an appropriate mix of traditional and new media to influence positive audiences and drive communication across the organization and for customers.
  • Continually raise the bar on development of compelling, data-driven storytelling with an associate and customer focus.
  • Ensure all communications are aligned with corporate strategy and goals and exemplify the brand and ‘voice’ of the organization to support organizational goals and our values through all communications. 
  • Work closely with teams and departments, staying informed of communications needs and working proactively to anticipate opportunities to align and drive business strategy and goals with the appropriate communication vehicle.
  • Create and deliver presentations for organizational events.
  • Ensure internal communication messages are consistent with external communication messages. 
  • Support the communication response to crisis situations which affect organizational perception and reputation. 
  • Measure and track the effectiveness of communications and channels making recommendations to adjust as appropriate.
  • Monitor accuracy and timeliness of information distributed.

  • Strategic skills: Ability to identify strategic communications needs aligned to business goals and strategies to keep associates informed, engaged and connected to the business. Think creatively and with agile, forward-thinking vision on how to answer requests and take on challenges in a way that will ultimately improve internal awareness and connection.
  • Writing skills: You need excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills as well as the journalistic ability to source stories from associates. Act as editor and brand champion for internal communications.
  • Speaking skills: You also need strong speaking skills as you are likely to be called on to give presentations to staff. Internal communications managers need sensitivity to an organization’s goals and values and the ability to relay them to associates. 
  • Interpersonal skills: You need good interpersonal and relationship-building skills in order to work with communications and HR departments. You also need to possess the confidence to deal with senior executives and explain communication techniques to them. 
  • Creative skills: You need the creative ability to devise creative communication strategies, content and visual assets.
  • Content skills: You will need to think through how to best craft relevant human interest stories, blog posts, ebooks, whitepapers, email copy, and presentations in order to engage our target audience. You should be skilled at writing for technical readers in a relevant way for the reader.
  • Organizational skills: You need to drive projects forward by staying on schedule. Staying assertive and accountable for implementation and ensuring message alignment and integration across communications channels.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 5-7 years of experience with Bachelors in public relations, communications, journalism, or similar experience. 
  • Previous working experience as internal communications specialist for a large organization, 
  • Writing for a variety of different audiences is also desired. General journalistic or marketing experience is beneficial. 
  • Experience in visual assets, content production, photo and video-editing skills is a plus. 
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite; photo and video-editing software is an asset 
  • Experience and knowledge in copywriting, proofreading and editing. 
  • Outstanding organizational and planning abilities. 
  • Proficient command in English language. 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, outstanding organizational and time-management skills.
  • Prior management of complex projects and advising senior managers is also looked upon favorably. 
  • Effective face-to-face, written, and phone skills.
  • High degree of comfort working with all levels of associates and a variety of vendors.  
  • Must be detail oriented and possess excellent follow-through skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tactical work while thinking strategically about projects deliverables and deadlines.
  • Periodic travel to customer sites, or company events or meetings as needed.
